". . . history is a dream already dreamt and destroyed."
John Hawkes: Second Skin
From Rock
In dark & without warning
they came from cliffs / bent
like wheat against wind / howling
like hyenas swarming / weeping
blue tears //
They came with petitions / bearing
a daughter's severed braids, grandmother's
teeth, dirt from a governor's grave // They
suggest war, hint @ peace / roll dice,
roast a dog //
Our paths cross at breakfast & latrine // A
man with one eye sings Danny Boy
in a raspy voice, cracking as he lowers
his son to his grave // A girl found
copulating is caged by a cop
who sells tickets //
After six months a new wind furrows
the plateau / dancers hint at mutual distrust.
Once successful, our mayor haggles for rat meat.
Last night, someone hung a goat / tonight
we've been warned to lock blinds /
wear shoes to bed //
